“Skiers and Snowboarders’ Paradise.”
While accounting for around 20% of Japan’s overall land mass, Hokkaido, the northernmost region and prefecture, only represents around 5% of the total population. It is the 2nd largest island and boasts stunning natural scenery perfect for outdoor adventures in both summer and winter. It is a known paradise for skiers and snowboarders and is home to excellent food, particularly seafood.
Sapporo is the capital city of Hokkaido and roughly an hour from the Shin-Chitose airport by train. It immediately offers various options for tourists: cherry blossoms, autumn leaves or the biggest snow festival in Japan, beer and whisky factories, Susukino for food and entertainment, easily accessible ski resorts among others. Sapporo will be a good starting point of your travel in Hokkaido especially for first-time visitors.
